The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is soliciting public input on a draft North Olympic Wildlife Area Management Plan (NOWA), which encompasses 1,800 acres on the Olympic Peninsula. Written comments will be accepted through April 15, 2010. "This plan will form the basis for future operations, management and budgeting decisions on these lands," said Lauri Vigue, a WDFW environmental planner. "It will be updated annually to address changing conditions and issues." The plan, which was developed with the help of a local citizen advisory group, is posted on the WDFW website. It's the first plan exclusively for the northern part of the Peninsula since it was split off from the southern half of the Peninsula and Puget Sound last year. New regulations for the recreational and commercial harvest of black sea bass, summer flounder, and weakfish became effective in New Jersey on March 25, 2010. New Jersey's adoption of the regulations was necessary to remain in compliance with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's (ASMFC) Interstate Fishery Management Plans (FMP) for these species. The regulation changes include a reduction in the recreational black sea bass season, a minor change in the summer flounder recreational season and a recreational and commercial possession limit reduction for weakfish. Sea turtle nesting season has begun on some of Florida’s beaches and will begin in earnest all over the state in the coming weeks. On some southeastern Florida beaches, endangered leatherback sea turtles are already laying eggs. This is good news after a winter that saw thousands of cold-stressed sea turtles successfully rescued and returned to the sea by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), with the assistance of many partner agencies and volunteers. The start of nesting season means beach residents and visitors need to follow a few precautions to ensure a successful season. Following up on the Aspen area's busiest bear conflict year in recent history, the Colorado Division of Wildlife is looking for members of the public to help educate others about avoiding problems with black bears. The Division of Wildlife has teamed up with the City of Aspen, Aspen Police Department and Pitkin County to form a volunteer Bear Aware team that will work around Aspen and Pitkin County. Volunteers for the team are being recruited from the area. An initial training and interview session for the team will take place on Wednesday, April 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Rio Grande Room (455 Rio Grande Place) in Aspen. Volunteers selected for the team will be required to attend a follow-up training the evening of Tuesday, April 20. Read more..
