The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved a rule amendment Thursday to help oyster harvesters adjust to pending new restrictions that will affect the time they are allowed to harvest and transport oysters on the water in Florida. Florida’s oyster fishery is jointly managed by the FWC and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS). DACS is developing a new rule to require harvesters to deliver their oysters to a certified dealer by 11:30 a.m. during May, June and July, and by noon during August, September and October. This action is being taken to meet new federal health safety requirements for the oyster industry by ensuring that harvested oysters are handled and processed during cooler morning hours in warm-weather months. N.H. Free Fishing Day will be here on Saturday, June 5, 2010, so make plans to get out and cast a line with family and friends on New Hampshire’s ponds, streams, rivers and lakes. Fish biologists studying spawning sturgeon in the Willamette River are asking anglers to steer clear of the buoys and lines used to mark study ites. According to Tucker Jones, white sturgeon project leader for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the agency has placed several egg mats on the river bed downriver of Willamette Falls to help document a newly discovered sturgeon spawning ground. “Unfortunately, it appears that several anglers have drifted too close to the buoy lines and gotten their fishing or anchor lines tangled,” Jones said. To recover their gear, anglers have had to cut a line – either their fishing line or the buoy line. Read more..Friday, April 30th, 2010 Posted in Fishing News | No Comments »
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved a rule on Thursday that makes the recreational harvest season for red snapper in Gulf of Mexico state waters consistent with the recently announced season in Gulf federal waters. Florida state waters in the Gulf extend out to nine nautical miles from shore, and federal waters extend beyond that line. This year’s recreational harvest season for red snapper in Gulf state waters will be open from June 1 through July 23. This is 22 days shorter than last year’s season, because federal fisheries managers predict that if the season length remained the same as last year, the allowable harvest for red snapper would be exceeded due to the high level of recreational fishing effort in the Gulf.
