For many anglers, “opening day” is synonymous with the start of the lowland lakes trout-fishing season, which gets under way April 24. More than 300,000 Washingtonians are expected to descend on trout-stocked waters throughout the state that day to kick off the new season. But anglers – and hunters, too – are also looking forward this month to a variety of other “opening days” for seasons ranging from lingcod fishing on the north coast to turkey hunting throughout the state. Meanwhile, the spring chinook fishery is heating up on the Columbia River and another razor-clam dig is tentatively scheduled April 16-18, provided that tests show the clams remain safe to eat. Missouri CWD Testing Shows No Cases In Free-Ranging Deer

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) recently completed testing for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) on a sample of free-ranging white-tailed deer from areas of Linn, Macon and Chariton Counties. Test results showed no cases of CWD. CWD is a fatal neurological disease that can be transmitted among cervids, such as deer, elk and moose. There is no evidence that CWD can infect people, or spread from infected deer to domestic livestock, such as sheep or cattle. CWD has been found in 17 states including Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Read more..

Michigan Fishing Reports April 1

Fishing comes and goes with the weather which is pretty much the pattern this time of year. Anglers are reminded that a 2010 fishing license is required starting April 1st. The 2010 regulations also go into effect on April 1st. Fishing Guides should be available from all license vendors. Southeast Lower Peninsula Lake Erie - Boat anglers are catching a few walleye when jigging, hand-lining, or trolling rapalas in Brest Bay. Huron River - Steelhead action continues. Try spawn, jig and wax worm or flies. Look for crappie in the backwaters. Suckers are still hitting on crawlers. Read more..

Southern New Jersey Deer Hunter Forum

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife is hosting a New Jersey Deer Hunter Forum on three evenings in April on Antler Point Restrictions (APR). Fish and Wildlife deer biologists will present deer data for south Jersey deer management zones (DMZs) that currently have APR. Deer data will also be presented for DMZs 30, 31, 34, 43 and 47, where the South Jersey branch of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) has requested APR regulations. The forum will allow deer hunters who hunt south Jersey DMZs to see data for existing APR zones and deer data from the DMZs proposed for APR.
