Deer Hunter Ethics Award Winners Announced

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA) and Turn In Poachers (TIP) have announced winners of the 17th annual Deer Hunter Ethics Award. The award honors deer hunters who have exhibited conduct during the 2009 season that can serve as an example of admirable hunting practices, according to MDHA State President John Erlandson Sr. “The awards are designed to spotlight those we hope positively represent the majority of hunters - ethical, thoughtful outdoors people,” he said. Florida Bass Are On The Beds And On Our Minds

Spring is here, and the bass are on their beds. The males have been fanning out beds on firm lake bottoms with plenty of nearby vegetation. If they are successful in their amorous intents to entice a female to join them, they’ll soon be spending time guarding the nest and fanning tens of thousands of eggs to keep them oxygenated. This annual ritual is dependent not only on the sexual appeal of the individual bass, but also on the quality of the environment, the vagaries of weather, and impacts of man. Minnesotas Lake Superior Coastal Program Awards Grants

Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program has awarded $502,041 in grants for 13 projects that protect and preserve the coastal resources of Lake Superior. Recipients include: * Carlton County - $75,000 for right-of-way acquisition along the final 4.0-mile section of the St. Louis River Trail in Cloquet. * Minnesota Department of Transportation - $96,392 to restore the historic structures at the Cascade River Wayside near Lutsen. * Minnesota Department of Natural Resources - $85,000 to improve the Ray Berglund State Wayside near Tofte; $32,000 to construct a floating fishing pier on Lax Lake in the Finland State Forest; and $42,275 to replace the Superior Hiking Trail bridge on the Split Rock River. $1 Million to States For Wolf Livestock Compensation Project

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today announced $1 million in grants that will be distributed to 10 states under a new demonstration program designed to help livestock producers undertake proactive, non-lethal activities to reduce the risk of livestock loss from predation by wolves, or to compensate livestock producers for livestock losses caused by wolves. These grants will be provided to Arizona, Idaho, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, and will support the states’ highest priority needs in assisting livestock producers.
