DNRE Says Fish Kills Common in Spring

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment reminds everyone that after the ice melts on Michigan’s lakes, it is not uncommon to discover dead fish or other aquatic creatures. Typical Michigan winters with heavy snow and ice cover create conditions that cause fish and other creatures such as soft-shell turtles, frogs, toads, and crayfish to die. “Winterkill is the most common type of fish kill,” said DNRE Fisheries Division Chief Kelley Smith, “It is particularly common in shallow lakes and streams. It can have significant impacts on fish populations and fishing quality.” Read more..

Exploring a refuge by canoe or kayak combines adventure with physical activity and an intimacy with nature that’s hard to beat. Whether you navigate on your own or take a guided trip, bring your own boat or rent one, many refuges make wonderful paddling destinations. Besides providing a close-up glimpse of shorebirds, mammals and other wildlife, refuges offer serenity, mapped water trails, and, sometimes, the option of multi-day camping excursions. Orienteering Workshop Offered At Sandhill

People who lack confidence hiking through the woods on their own can help ensure they will find their way back home by signing up for an Orienteering -- Fun with Compass and Map course being offered at the Sandhill Outdoor Skills Center on the weekend of May 1-2. Participants will learn how to navigate in the out-of-doors with compass and map, learn how to use orienteering compasses, read topographic maps and enjoy several practice runs on the compass courses. On the second day, participants test their new skills on a cross-country trek of several miles they design themselves. Read more..

Registration Open for NRA Junior Smallbore Rifle Camp

NRA's Training Department is pleased to announce that registration for the NRA Junior Smallbore Rifle Camp is now open. The camp will be held July 24-29, 2010 at Camp Perry, Ohio. "This is a wonderful opportunity for junior shooters to learn new skills and sharpen their ability to shoot smallbore rifle," said Marcus Raab, NRA National Coach Trainer (Rifle). The NRA Junior Smallbore Camp provides instruction in 3-position and 4-position rifle shooting from qualified NRA Certified Coaches, and allows students to enjoy a learning experience that will improve their shooting skills. Intermediate smallbore shooters ages 12-18 are eligible to attend, although beginners will be accepted on a space available basis. Shooters are responsible for providing their own equipment for the camp. Read more..
