FWC Charges 4 Men For Possessing Migratory Birds

You may see them around your backyard feeder. They are prized for their colorful plumage. Indigo and painted buntings are migratory songbirds that winter in South Florida and migrate north in the spring, but some make a year-round home in the Sunshine State. With their numbers declining because of habitat loss, these beautiful birds face an additional ugly threat: the exotic pet trade. The buntings, protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, are frequently trapped and sold. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) continues to break up these rings and release the captive birds back into their natural habitats. Read more..

Some much needed rain and even some snow has fallen across most of Wisconsin in the last week, reducing current fire danger somewhat, especially in the south. Unfortunately most of the precipitation missed the northern third of the state, and wildfire danger remains high, especially in northwestern Wisconsin. Up to 3 inches of rain was reported in the last week in some parts of central and southern Wisconsin, and 3 to 5 inches of snow fell in east central to northeast Wisconsin Wednesday night into Thursday, though it is expected to melt quickly with warmer temperatures in the forecast going into weekend. Minnesota Bear Hunt Application Deadline Is May 7

Applications for the 2010 Minnesota black bear hunt are due Friday, May 7. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will conduct a lottery for 9,500 permits spread throughout 11 permit areas. This fall’s bear hunt begins Wednesday, Sept. 1, and concludes Sunday, Oct. 17. Individuals must apply for the lottery at a license agent or the DNR License Center, 500 Lafayette Road in St. Paul, by calling 888-MNLicense, or online. Licenses for the no-quota area, which is the area outside of the 11 permit areas, can be purchased directly at any license agent beginning Thursday, July 1. No previous application is necessary to buy a no-quota area license. Read more..

Strong storms this week have raised water levels in the rivers and that should help those seeking steelhead and suckers. Colder weather by the end of the week will most likely slow the bite for panfish however it should rebound with the next warm up. As we move into spring fishing, anglers are reminded that bass season is closed. Southeast Lower Peninsula Lake Erie - Those fishing off Luna Pier and Bolles Harbor have caught some limits of walleye. The Edison fishing pier is open. Anglers are catching channel catfish, white bass and the occasional out of season bass. The "catch and immediate release" bass season does not open until the last Saturday in April. Bluegill and crappie were caught in the cuts and canals around Point Mouillee and Lake Erie ... Read more..
