Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation invites you to learn about gray wolves and Shira’s moose in Oregon as it kicks off its Spring Speaker Series with a free presentation by state wildlife biologists on Wednesday, April 21 at 7 p.m. in Portland. Both species have a fascinating life history and their stories will be told by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists who study, manage and work with them. Russ Morgan will discuss his work with Oregon’s burgeoning population of gray wolves and Pat Matthews will share his insights about our newest residents, Shira’s moose. The New Hampshire Office of the Attorney General and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department have decided not to pursue reimbursement of costs for the extensive search and rescue operation on Mount Washington in April 2009 for then-17-year-old hiker Scott Mason of Halifax, Mass. Mason was missing for three days after leaving the Appalachian Mountain Club's Pinkham Notch Visitor Center alone, intending to complete a 17-mile hike in one day. According to his account, he spent several days in the Great Gulf Wilderness attempting a shortcut of his planned route after spraining his ankle during the morning of his first day out. The latest edition of the Programs & Special Events catalog lists more than 300 things to do now through the end of August, most of which are free, except for the vehicle permit needed to enter state parks. Simply by being in the right place at the right time, law enforcement officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) were the first to respond to a seaplane crash Wednesday afternoon on Lake Okeechobee, near Observation Island. The plane departed from Lantana Airport earlier in the day but soon went off radar. The Glades County Sheriff’s Office contacted the FWC for assistance after receiving a report of a plane down. FWC officers quickly launched their boat and were able to pinpoint the plane’s location based on alerts coming from the EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radiobeacon). Read more..
