Two men were arrested on April 1 for illegal possession and transportation of northern pike while fishing at a tributary of Lake Champlain. State Game Wardens Dale Whitlock and Lt. Donald Isabelle apprehended the two men who had been fishing below a dam on Dead Creek in Panton. One had 14 trophy-sized northern pike in the back of his truck, 9 over the daily limit. Justin M. Bushey, 31, of Addison was charged for having over the limit of northern pike. If convicted, his fines and restitution cost could be $452 and he would lose his hunting, fishing and trapping licenses for one year. The state Game and Fish Department’s annual spring mule deer survey is set to begin April 12 in western North Dakota. Weather permitting, the survey takes a week to complete. Bruce Stillings, big game biologist in Dickinson, said biologists have completed aerial surveys of the same 24 badlands study areas since the 1950s. “The survey allows us to obtain solid mule deer population data for the badlands, such as demographic trends and production ratios (buck-to-doe and fawn-to-doe),” Stillings said. Twenty-six Free Fishing events were announced today by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Pete Grannis. During these specially-designated activities in each DEC region, the agency waives the requirement to purchase a fishing license with the goal of encouraging new interest in fishing and educating the public about New York's unique natural resources. "These events are a great way to take part in one of New York's oldest and most exciting outdoor recreational activities," Commissioner Grannis said. "Fishing is a wonderful way to spend time with family or to enjoy solace in nature, and we hope that young and old alike take part in these fun and educational events." Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks reminds hunters that an unlimited number of $5 SuperTag chances are available for fall 2010 hunts. Eight lucky hunters will win the chance to hunt a moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, elk, deer, antelope, mountain lion and bison in any legal district open for that species. SuperTag lottery proceeds go to enhance hunting access and boost FWP enforcement efforts. To purchase a SuperTag, a 2010 conservation license is needed.
