Celebrate Earth Day by bringing the family to Discover WILD New Hampshire Day -- Saturday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the grounds of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, 11 Hazen Drive, Concord, N.H. Admission is free. This outdoor festival is fun for all ages – kids can try archery, cast with the “Let’s Go Fishing” program, and create wildlife arts and crafts. The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA), the nation’s leader in defending your rights to hunt, fish and trap, has created a contest to recognize America’s successful turkey hunters. To enter, submit a photo of your turkey taken during the 2010 spring turkey hunting season along with a $5.00 entry fee. Entries must be submitted and postmarked by May 28, 2010. See instructions below on how to enter. Initial entries will be judged by USSA panel of experts on the quality of appearance, beard, spurs, and the photogenic quality. From all submissions 25 finalists will be selected. Finalists will be judged online by the public with a two week voting period. The top three vote getters will be the winners. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today announced nearly $66 million in grants to enable 25 states to work with private landowners, conservation organizations and other partners to protect and conserve the habitat of threatened and endangered species. The grants, awarded through the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund, will benefit numerous species ranging from the desert tortoise to the Indiana bat. “These grants are part of our ongoing commitment to work with states and other partners to ensure America’s beautiful land and wildlife are conserved for future generations,” Salazar said. “They provide the means for states to develop the long-term partnerships with landowners and communities necessary to conserve habitat and foster stewardship that will bring species back from the threat of extinction.” Read more..Monday, April 12th, 2010 Posted in Assorted Outdoors | No Comments »
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has removed two sunken barges from the Somers Cove Marina, making it ready to welcome boaters this season. The barges sank in the marsh of Jersey Island near Somers Cove Marina approximately 20 years ago. "For years, this area of the marina has been a bit of an eyesore. Now, we can begin the first stage of a beautification project in that section,” said Lloyd Tyler, executive director of Somers Cove Marina. Beautification efforts include covering the land next to the project area with topsoil and grass, and planting new trees. Read more..
