Walleye Bag Limits Adjusted For Ceded Territory Lakes

Daily walleye bag limits have been revised on 530 lakes in the Wisconsin Ceded Territory in response to harvest declarations made by six bands of Chippewa in Wisconsin, the state Department of Natural Resources has announced. These bag limits are effective between May 1, 2010 and March 6, 2011, inclusive. There will be a three walleye bag limit for sport anglers on 190 lakes, and a two-fish daily bag limit on 340 lakes, unless they are adjusted upwards later in the season for lakes lightly or not speared. Most off-reservation Chippewa tribal harvest takes places during the spring spearfishing season. Tribal spearers typically have harvested walleye from 170-180 lakes annually, regardless of the number of lakes initially declared. Service Transmits Wind Turbine Guideline Advisory Committee Recommendations

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today transmitted a set of final recommendations on how to minimize the impacts of land-based wind farms on wildlife and its habitat to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. These recommendations represent the consensus of the 22 diverse members of the Wind Turbine Guidelines Federal Advisory Committee and were reached during a more than two-year process. Secretary Salazar plans to review the recommendations and take them under advisement as he directs the Service to develop guidelines for evaluating wind energy development on public and private lands. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment today announced the winners of Michigan’s Fourth Annual State Virtual Archery Tournament. More than 650 student archers enrolled at schools participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) competed in the recent tournament. Experience Science Firsthand At MarineQuest 2010

Visitors of all ages can explore the world of science at the 16th annual MarineQuest at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI). The free open house takes place Saturday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the FWRI headquarters, 100 8th Ave. S.E., in downtown St. Petersburg. Last year, thousands flocked to the FWRI open house for a hands-on learning experience. The event features more than 60 exhibits with interactive displays and live animals. Participants can learn about cutting-edge research and join FWRI biologists as they demonstrate how they rescue distressed manatees, tag fish and monitor red tide.
