This Week’s Razor Clam Dig Is On

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) today finalized a razor-clam dig for this weekend at three Washington beaches. The openings are all on morning low tides. They are: Friday, April 16, (8:32 A.M., -0.7) Long Beach and Twin Harbors only Saturday, April 17, (9:12 A.M., -0.7) Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Kalaloch only Sunday, April 18, (9:56 A.M., -0.6) Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Kalaloch only No digging will be allowed after noon at any of the beaches. Under WDFW rules, harvesters may take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 taken, regardless of size or condition. Each digger's limit must be kept in a separate container. Fair Weather Boosts Missouri Youth Turkey Harvest

Young hunters checked 3,945 turkeys during Missouri’s youth turkey season April 10 and 11, thanks in large part to ideal hunting conditions. Top counties for the youth season were Franklin with 133 turkeys checked, Osage with 101 and Ste. Genevieve with 77. Male turkeys gobble most actively on warm, sunny days with moderate wind. Weather during this year’s youth hunt closely matched this description, paving the way for an excellent hunt. Read more..

Nongame Program Eligible for $740,673 Federal Grant

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has announced that the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is eligible to receive State Wildlife Grants through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, totaling $740,673, to conserve wildlife and their habitats. The State Wildlife Grants Program is designed to provide annual funding to fish and wildlife agencies that have established wildlife action plans. New Hampshire’s plan has been in place since 2006. "These federal funds provide more than 75% of the money available for New Hampshire to accomplish targeted conservation for species that are not hunted, fished or trapped," said John Kanter, Coordinator of Fish and Game's Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Program. Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Population

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley announced today that the Chesapeake Bay’s blue crab population has increased substantially for the second straight year. The results of the most recent winter dredge survey show a dramatic 60% increase in Maryland’s crab population. The survey indicates that 2008 management measures put into place through a historic collaboration with Virginia and the Potomac River Fisheries Commission are continuing to pay dividends with the crab population at its highest level since 1997.
