Bear country.” What mental image does that phrase conjure up for you? A fern-choked valley in the Appalachian Mountains? A high meadow in the Rockies? Missourians often forget they could encounter a black bear while camping or hiking in their home state. The rules for camping and hiking in bear country apply in Missouri, too. The Show-Me State is home to a small but growing black bear population. Female bears with cubs are an increasingly common sight here, and the average size of Missouri bears is increasing as young bears that come north across the Arkansas border and those born here mature. This fall, Northwest Florida offers some special deer and wild hog hunts at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and a unique “big-game” hunt on the island of St. Vincent NWR. The application period for these hunts begins at 10 a.m. May 4 and continues through 11:59 p.m. June 10. There are two archery hunts, two general gun hunts and one mobility-impaired gun hunt on St. Marks NWR, which covers 60,000 acres in Wakulla, Jefferson and Taylor counties. Five-day archery hunts for white-tailed deer and wild hogs take place Nov. 9-13 in the Panacea Unit and Nov. 2-6 in the Wakulla Unit. There are 200 available permits for each hunt at $15 each. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife today announced that it will eliminate the bag and size limits on trout caught at Hebo Lake in conjunction with plans to drain the lake this spring. Effective April 25 – May 2, anglers will be permitted to retain as many trout as they can catch at the three-acre lake located approximately 16 miles southeast of Tillamook on the Siuslaw National Forest. In addition, there is no restriction on the size of the fish that anglers will be allowed to keep during this eight-day period. All other angling regulations will continue to apply. The central coast fishery, from Cape Falcon just north of Manzanita to Humbug Mountain near Port Orford, is a very popular fishery among Oregonians. Anglers may fish inside the 40-fathom line (defined by waypoints) seven days per week, through Oct. 31 or until the 12,284-pound quota is met. The all-depth dates for the spring season are May 13-15, 20-22 and June 3-5. Backup dates (if sufficient quota remains) are June 17-19, and July 1-3, 15-17 and 29-31. The spring season catch limit is 105,948 pounds. The summer season opens Aug. 6 with scheduled open days every other Friday and Saturday until the total area all-depth catch limit of 141,265 pounds is taken or October 31, which ever occurs first.
