Broodstock Salmon Anglers – Ready, Set, Fish!

Fish and Game plans to begin stocking big broodstock Atlantic salmon into the Merrimack and Pemigewasset rivers around the first weekend in May, according to Matt Carpenter, the Anandromous Fish Restoration Coordinator for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. The fish will be spread between stocking sites in Bristol, Franklin, Concord and Bow, N.H. More than 400 broodstock salmon will be released this spring. Fish and Game stocks brood stock Atlantic salmon each spring and fall, giving New Hampshire the only managed Atlantic salmon river fishery in New England. “These are among the best-looking fish that I have seen so far!” Carpenter said. “Many of the largest fish lack the fin wear that often occurs with hatchery-raised salmon. Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day April 22 by learning about some of the anglers, lake champions, and other citizens who have helped clean up and protect Wisconsin's environment in the last 40 years. New online videos, slideshow and stories help tell their stories, and a timeline details major milestones on the road to environmental progress. With minimal rainfall in the last week, conditions remain very dry across Wisconsin and fire danger has remained Very High to Extreme for much of the past week. This time of year there is still a great deal of dead vegetation that will dry out quickly and be available fuel for a wildfire. In the past week, 121 wildfires burned 186 acres across Wisconsin. Lake Ovid Boating Access Site Closed Intermittently

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment announced today that site redevelopment and paving improvements have begun at the Lake Ovid Boating Access Site, located in Sleepy Hollow State Park in Clinton County. Upgrades will include asphalt paving, improved vehicular circulation, an expanded parking area, barrier-free accessibility, and the handling of surface water runoff in an environmentally-friendly manner. The improvements will benefit site users by providing a more efficient use of parking space, as well as enhanced accessibility for persons with mobility impairments. Read more..

Lake Washington Sockeye Salmon

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will host a public workshop May 26 in Issaquah to discuss a recent report that provides an analysis of data that could be used in determining management goals for sockeye salmon returning to Lake Washington and the Cedar River. The workshop is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. at WDFW’s Issaquah Hatchery, 125 W Sunset Way. During the meeting, WDFW staff will discuss the report, which is based on an independent review Lake Washington sockeye salmon populations, including the Cedar River stock. The report provides an independent assessment of the biological characteristics of Lake Washington sockeye, including productivity and returns per spawning fish, said Jim Scott, assistant director of WDFW’s fish program.
