The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted 2010 ocean salmon seasons for sport and commercial fisheries keeping with Pacific Fishery Management Council guidelines that were set April 15. The PFMC approves salmon fishing regulations for ocean waters from three to 200 miles off shore. The Commission approves similar regulations for ocean waters extending three miles from the state’s shoreline. From Cape Falcon, near Manzanita, south to the California border, PFMC adopted the first significant ocean fisheries for chinook salmon since 2007. However, the approved fisheries will still be restricted because stocks of Sacramento River chinook salmon continue to be weak for the third straight year. The Arizona Game and Fish Department yesterday collected a dead, intact carcass of a cat resembling an ocelot, a rare small to medium-sized cat that is listed as a federally endangered species. The animal reportedly was accidentally hit and killed by a motorist on Sunday, April 18 on Highway 60 between Superior and Globe. In cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the Department is in the process of shipping the carcass to the Service’s national forensics laboratory located in Ashland, Oregon, where it will undergo testing to determine if the cat is actually an ocelot of wild origin. Then it’s time to sign them up for the Ocala Outdoor Adventure Camp at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Ocala Conservation Center in the Ocala National Forest. Registration for the 2010 summer sessions has already begun. The summer camp is for boys and girls, ages 9-15, and focuses on wildlife conservation, outdoor skills and firearm safety. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today a single hooded merganser was selected to appear on the 2010-2011 Federal Junior Duck Stamp. The design for the new stamp, painted by 18-year old Rui Huang of Columbus, Ohio, was chosen by a panel of judges at the National Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest held at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul. The prisma-color entry, which previously won the Ohio State Junior Duck Stamp Contest, was judged the winner among Best-of-Show entries from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The 2010-2011 Junior Duck Stamp, which the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service sells for $5 to stamp collectors, conservationists, and the general public will be released on June 25, 2010.
