Bear Attacks Hiker In Red River Gorge Area Of Kentucky

More than a dozen wildlife and law enforcement officers are actively searching for a black bear that attacked a hiker Sunday afternoon in the Red River Gorge Geological Area north of Campton, Ky. A Springfield resident reported that he was attacked by a bear as he hiked with his dog along the trail to Gray’s Arch near the Wolfe-Menifee county line around 2:30 p.m. Sunday’s incident is the only known bear attack on a person in Kentucky in modern times. “This is not typical black bear behavior,” said Wildlife Division Director Karen Waldrop of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. “We are aggressively trying to locate and trap this bear so that it can be euthanized for the public’s protection.” Read more..

NRP Continuing Search For Missing Boater

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police (NRP) is investigating a boating accident that was reported Monday, June 29 at 10 p.m., near the area of the Potomac River approximately two miles from the Route 301 bridge. An investigation revealed that a 20 foot steel-hall vessel was traveling from Pope’s Creek area on the Maryland side of the Potomac River to Mathias Point, Virginia. The vessel encountered high winds and rough waters, causing it to take on water and sink. Two people were aboard the vessel. Glen Martin Dawson, age 52 of King George Va. was able to swim to shore and summon help. The other occupant, Daniel Ray Myers, 36, of King George Va., is missing and presumed drowned. Read more..

Bears Attack Camper At Philmont Scout Ranch

One bear was killed and conservation officers were looking for another bear Wednesday following separate incidents in which bears scratched a camper and injured a goat at Philmont Scout Ranch. The Department of Game and Fish set a trap for a bear that ran off after it jumped on a tent and took a swipe at a camper at about 5:40 a.m. Wednesday. The adult camper received a deep scratch to his face and was treated at the Philmont health facility. Another man in the tent was not injured. The men had secured their garbage and food by suspending it in a tree and had stored their toiletries and clothes they wore while cooking away from the tent. Read more..
