Utah Antlerless Deer Results Available Faster

If you're one of the more than 27,000 hunters who applied for an antlerless big game hunting permit for this fall, watch your e-mail closely on July 14, 2010. If you supplied the Division of Wildlife Resources with an e-mail address, you'll receive an e-mail letting you know if you drew a permit. If you didn't supply an e-mail address, you can learn the results by calling 1-800-221-0659 or visiting wildlife.utah.gov. Walleye Threaten Red Fleet

If you want to catch big walleye at Red Fleet Reservoir, you'd better catch them soon — the walleye fishery isn't going to last all that long. "Someone illegally introduced walleye into Red Fleet," says Ed Johnson, aquatics biologist with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. "Our surveys show we now have several strong age classes." Biologists caught an equal number of walleye and rainbow trout in their nets during surveys this past spring. Several of the walleye weighed more than six pounds. Johnson says walleye fishing should be good for the next few years. "Then the fishing for all species, including bass and rainbows, will crash," Johnson says. Read more..

ODFW Amends Columbia, Gilbert River Sturgeon Seasons

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has amended white sturgeon seasons on the Columbia and Gilbert rivers to make them more consistent with other regulations. Effective July 5, sturgeon retention seasons for the Gilbert River will be concurrent with the lower Willamette River and Multnomah Channel. The Gilbert River originates at Sturgeon Lake on Sauvie Island near Portland and flows approximately four miles to its confluence with the Multnomah Channel. The Willamette River below Willamette Falls and the entire Multnomah Channel are closed to sturgeon retention until Nov. 1 when the season is scheduled to reopen on Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays through the end of the year. 2010 Duck Breeding Population Estimates Released

The 2010 preliminary estimate of the total duck population from the traditional survey area of the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey is 40.9 million birds. This is similar to last year’s estimate of 42 million birds and is 21 percent above the long-term average. This report summarizes information about the status of duck populations and wetland habitats during spring 2010, focusing on areas encompassed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife (USFWS) and Canadian Wildlife Services’ (CWS) Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey. The Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey samples more than two million square miles of waterfowl habitat across the north-central and northeastern United States, south-central, eastern, and northern Canada, and Alaska.
