Rules going into effect this summer are designed to prevent new introductions of three invasive species. Under the rules effective July 1, 2010, people must have a license to possess wolf-dog hybrids, feral or wild swine, and mute swans in captivity. Also as of July 1, it is illegal to release any of these species into the wild and such releases can result in penalties of up to $1,142, as well as restitution costs for any damage caused by these animals. “All three species have proven their ability to exist in the wild in Wisconsin,” says Scott Loomans, wildlife regulations specialist for the Department of Natural Resources. “Wild and feral swine for instance, are opportunistic omnivores that eat an amazing amount and variety of plants and wild animals.” Read more..Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 Posted in Wild Animal News | No Comments »
The young black bear hanging around Eau Claire's southeast side for the past couple weeks has been a bit troublesome, but it has one feature making it especially valuable to wildlife researchers who are asking the public for tolerance and cooperation. This bear is wearing a sporty black and brown collar worth more than $2,000. But its real value is in the information being stored on a digital memory card inside the collar. Every day, the collar takes a location reading from GPS satellites and records it. At the end of a full year, sometime next March, researchers will recover the collar, if all goes well, and they will be able to precisely chart the young bear’s movements through the seasons. Conditions may vary as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities. Northwest Animas River - The flow is 564 cfs and fishing is slow. Try caddis pupa, Hare’s Ear or pheasant tail nymphs. Chama River - Upper section flow is 68 cfs and fishing is slow. Below El Vado Dam, the flow is 605 cfs and the water is green and murky. Fishing is reported as slow to fair with a few browns up to 18 inches being caught on Rapalas or night crawlers. In the past day Conservation Officers in southwestern New Hampshire have responded to two incidents involving lost or injured hikers. INJURED MASSACHUSETTS TEEN RESCUED: On July 5, 2010, at approximately 4:55 p.m., the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department received a call from Department of Resources and Economic Development (DRED), Division of Parks and Recreation Assistant Manager Susan Tirrell at Mount Monadonock in Jaffrey in reference to a young man who sustained a lower leg injury just below the summit while hiking the White Cross Trail. The victim, Ivan Seto, age 18, of Sudbury, Massachusetts, was out for a day hike on the mountain with a group of friends.
