State Parks Feature Free Family Activities

Visitors to South Dakota state parks will have the chance to take part in a variety of special family activities on the third weekend in July. The free activities are a great way for people of all ages to enjoy the outdoors. Make plans to attend the following events: * Lantern Tour of Fort Buildings, Fort Sisseton Historic State Park near Lake City, July 16, 9:30 p.m. CDT. Join a tour guide in period costume and explore the grounds and buildings as you listen to stories about life at the fort. Each adult will be provided a lantern. Atlantic Herring Landing Days Announced

Allowable landing days for Atlantic herring (sea herring) in the coming weeks were set this week by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commissioners from the states of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. There will be four landing days (Monday – Thursday) during the weeks of July 12 and July 19; and three landing days (Monday – Wednesday) the weeks of July 26 and August 2. Specific days that are open to landing under this agreement are July 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, 28 and August 2, 3, 4. All other days are considered ‘days out’ during this time period. We are now in the transitional time between the salmon coming in and the lake trout moving out. Lake trout can still be taken out deep in colder water, with smaller ones still in close. Now would be an exceptional time to fish offshore, approximately 150 to 200 feet of water fishing the top 50 feet. Look for scum lines and bugs on the surface. Southeast Lower Peninsula Lake Erie - Walleye fishing slowed this week. The warmer water has pushed most fish into deeper summer patterns. Anglers should concentrate their efforts on the deeper waters off Stoney Point and near the Fermi Plant. Trolling spoons was the most effective lure presentation this week. Massachusetts Governor’s Anti-Gun Bill Moves Forward

A Massachusetts bill, sponsored by Governor Deval Patrick, would severely impact gun purchasers. Sportsmen should contact their legislators and urge them to oppose the bill. House Bill 4102 prohibits the purchasing, renting or leasing of more than one firearm in a thirty day timeframe. Additionally, the bill requires all private sales and transfers of firearms be done through a federally licensed firearms dealer. Sportsmen could not sell a gun to a friend , associate or pass a gun to a family member without first going to a licensed dealer to complete the transfer under the provisions of HB 4102.
