Montana Set To Offer Wolf Hunting Licenses Aug. 23

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will offer license sales beginning Aug. 23 for the state’s regulated wolf hunting season. The FWP Commission set the statewide harvest quota at 186 wolves for hunting seasons that are set to open Sept. 4 for archers, Sept. 15 in select backcountry areas and Oct. 23 for the general hunting season. Licenses will be valid within 13 specifically defined wolf management units. Hunters must obtain permission to hunt on private lands. Wolf licenses will be available for purchase online at fwp.mt.gov, or from any FWP license provider. Hunters must have, or also purchase, a valid 2010 conservation license. Wolf hunting licenses are $19 for residents and $350 for nonresidents. Read more..

Mark your calendars for this fall's big hunting and fishing event in the Granite State -- National Hunting and Fishing Day -- on September 25, 2010. It's a statewide celebration hosted by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, with presenting sponsor the Wildlife Heritage Foundation of New Hampshire, featuring a Sporting Expo in Concord, shooting and other hands-on activities and demos at Fish and Game's Owl Brook Hunter Education Center, and other special events around the state. Outdoor Campus Invites Women To Try Something New Outdoors

The Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls will host its annual Women’s Try It Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. CDT on Saturday, July 17. The open-house event offers women of all ages a variety of outdoor activities, including such things as archery, paddling, geocaching, BB-gun shooting and outdoor cooking. “It’s a special day for women who are eager to sample different outdoor activities,” said Alison Eden, The Outdoor Campus volunteer coordinator. “They can come and try one activity or all of them. It’ll be a lot of fun, and it should inspire a sense of community along with a true love for nature. This time though, the guys have to stay home!” Read more..

Bumper Year for Bog Turtles

Drought in the mountains the past two summers dried up much up the suitable habitat for bog turtles, but thanks to wet weather, increased trapping and improved management efforts, 2010 is looking like a record season for the smallest of Georgia’s protected turtles. Federally threatened and listed as endangered in Georgia, bog turtles are rare in much of their native range due to loss of habitat. Researchers know of only 67 turtles in the state, 16 of which were released from a “headstart” restoration effort. With increased trapping efforts this year, 40 percent of the known bog turtles in Georgia were captured and released during the monitoring season. Read more..
