Catch rates for panfish were good. Trout and salmon anglers were doing well and the walleye bite has improved. Strong storms at the end of the week may scatter the fish however catch rates should resume by the weekend. Southeast Lower Peninsula Lake Erie - Fishing has not changed since last week. Walleye anglers will want to fish deeper waters near Canada and Ohio while trolling spoons and crawlers. Yellow perch fishing should pick up soon. Try 10 to 20 feet of water off Luna Pier or the shipping channel. Walleye anglers are catching white bass, white perch and freshwater drum. Good catfish action near the River Raisin. Read more..

Additional rainfall in the last week statewide continues to have many of the state’s rivers and streams running at very high levels. Severe thunderstorms across southern and central Wisconsin this week dropped as much as 4 to 6 inches of rain in some isolated areas, with many areas receiving up to 2 to 3 inches. Many rivers were rising and at or approaching flood stage. The Kickapoo River was out of its banks at Wildcat Mountain State Park. The Baraboo, Black, Rock, Crawfish and lower Wisconsin rivers were all running very high. The constantly changing weather of the past week has made for some real inconsistent fishing action, and kept anglers watchful of the skies. NRC Implements Antler Point Restrictions

Updated: This press release replaces one issued last week on this topic. It clarifies the license options to hunters in Deer Management Unit 487, which is the Bovine TB Zone in Northeastern Lower Michigan. Hunters in Deer Management Unit (DMU) 487 - the six-county portion of the Northeastern Lower Peninsula where bovine tuberculosis is an issue with the deer herd - should be aware they will need to abide by restrictions approved by the Natural Resources Commission (NRC) at its July 8 meeting in Lansing. The change affects how the regular tag on the combination license can be used in the area and limits hunters with archery or firearms licenses to one buck per year. Deer Management Unit 487 includes Presque Isle, Alpena, Montmorency, Oscoda, Alcona, and Iosco counties. Those who opt to purchase ... Read more..

Georgia Flathead Catfish State Record

Wayne County angler Jim Dieveney of Screven caught a flathead catfish on the Altamaha River on July 11, 2010 that ties the current state record flathead catfish! Dieveney reeled in an 83 lb. 0 oz., 52.5-inch flathead catfish, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division. The most recent state record for a flathead catfish also was caught on the Altamaha River (and also by a Screven resident) in 2006. “Congratulations to Jim Dieveney on this fabulous catch,” says Division Fisheries Management Chief John Biagi. “Georgia’s tremendous natural resources continue to yield great catches to anglers and this is no exception.
