Larger Than Life Stories of Lumberjacks and Logging Camps

Known throughout the years as lumberjacks, shanty boys, loggers and shackers, the timbermen of the Upper Peninsula are found at the center of many larger-than-life stories depicting their romanticized livelihood. Historian Troy Henderson will compare those stories to the reality of life as a timberman during his illustrated presentation "Life in the Big Woods: Upper Peninsula Lumber Camps," at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee Township, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3. Henderson's talk traces everyday life in the Upper Peninsula logging camps between 1850 and 1950, a time when timbermen lived and worked in the forests on a seasonal basis. NRA and Pyramyd Air Offers Discount to Disabled Shooters

The National Rifle Association and Pyramyd Air are partnering up to offer disabled shooters and adaptive sports groups a discount on the Air Arms MPR air rifle. Only available through the NRA, the rifle is now available for the discounted price of $750. “One of the greatest obstacles holding back the advancement of disabled shooters is the affordability of precision grade air rifles,” said NRA Disabled Shooting Manager Vanessa Ross. “Pyramyd Air’s willingness to offer the Air Arms MPR at the discounted price means that participation by competitive shooters and adaptive sports groups should increase to record numbers.” Read more..

Sufi Student Fends Off Bear

Patrick Almy of Switzerland came to New Mexico to study Sufi in the Manzano Mountains near here. Tuesday morning he awoke to a small cinnamon-colored black bear sitting on top of his tent. The bear scratched Almy during his efforts to get out of the tent and out from under the animal, said Department of Game and Fish Officer John Martsh, who interviewed the Sufi student later in the day. In a written statement, Almy said he tried to run away from the bear, but then remembered what he had learned on a “cougar poster” he read while visiting a campground in the Cibola National Forest. A fish that can grow to over 40" is sure to delight any angler who is lucky enough to catch one of these beasts.
