A one-day Becoming an Outdoors-Woman pheasant hunting workshop will take place in the Upper Peninsula Saturday, Sept. 11, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment announced today. The Beyond BOW pheasant hunting workshop, co-sponsored by Black Duck Sporting Clays of Rapid River, is designed for women who have previous shooting experience and would like to expand on their abilities in a fun and non-competitive atmosphere. The program, held at the Black Duck Sporting Clays facility, begins at 9 a.m. and will conclude around 4:30 p.m. Participants will take turns going through a sporting clays course before heading out into the field to hunt, where each hunter will have the chance to bag three pheasants. The National Rifle Association National Smallbore 3-Position Championship will be held from July 22-25 at the 2010 NRA National Rifle and Pistol Matches held at Camp Perry, Ohio. The championship is a 2400-point aggregate of the Metallic Sight Championship and the Any Sight Championship. Competitors in the Any Sight category are allowed to use both metallic and telescopic sights. The two sub-aggregate championships consist of three matches fired with .22 caliber rifles. In each of the three matches, 40 shots are fired at a distance of 50 meters from each of the prone, standing, and kneeling positions. Last year’s champion, Specialist Joseph Hein of the United States Army Marksmanship Unit, took home the Frank Parsons Memorial Trophy with a score of 2378-141x. One person killed a black bear when it approached aggressively Wednesday night, and another person killed one that was attacking a llama near Placitas, the Department of Game and Fish announced Thursday. State law allows individuals to kill wildlife when it is a threat to human safety, or is destroying crops or other property. As of early this week, the Department has handled 151 bear complaints since April 1, with more coming in each day. More than 30 bears have been killed statewide since April 1, mostly males that were observed breaking into houses, attacking livestock, or involved in bear attacks on humans. The bear killed in Cedar Crest by a citizen who felt threatened was a male roughly 200 pounds or more, shot once at about 15 feet. The llama attack ... The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will provide more than $3.3 million to support 68 fish habitat projects in 36 states across the nation under the National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP). An additional $9.9 million in partner contributions, over $13.2 million in total, will go toward restoring and enhancing stream, lake and coastal habitat, as well as to improving recreational fishing and helping endangered species. The funding is provided for priority projects identified through fifteen Fish Habitat Partnerships established under the NFHAP. The partnerships formed help direct funding and other resources to habitat improvement projects offering the highest long-term conservation returns. Read more..
