All hunter education graduates who are at least 11 years old and have not graduated high school are invited to compete in the annual Nebraska High School Small Bore Rifle Silhouette Championships. The event will be held Sept. 25 at Pressey Wildlife Management Area (WMA) south of Broken Bow. There is no entry fee, but each participant must show proof of hunter education certification. Trophies and medals will be awarded to winners of each class, and there will be individual and team competition. Pre-registration is encouraged. Call Matthew Haumont at (308) 872-2348. A new state fishing record for the yellow perch has been established on Parksville Lake in Polk County by an angler from neighboring Bradley County, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has confirmed. Jackie V. Kersey, of Cleveland, landed a 2 lbs, 2 oz. yellow perch that measured 14 ¾ inches in length. He used a minnow on a 10-lb. test line while fishing with a 7-foot Berkley Bionix rod and Pfleuger Gold Medalist Pro reel. The new record surpasses a tie for the previous record of 1 lb., 15 oz., shared by a pair of anglers. Danny Casson caught his fish in 1992 while fishing on the nearby Hiwassee River. David C. North Dakota Game and Fish Department fisheries crews stocked a record number of walleye into state waters, according to Jerry Weigel, fisheries production and development section leader. The Garrison Dam (10 million) and Valley City (1.5 million) national fish hatcheries produced 11.5 million fingerlings, besting the record of 10.9 million in 1991. “Fish quality and stocking conditions were great, with really nice fish and lots of cool water and flooded vegetation at the stocking sites,” Weigel said. “The federal hatchery system really delivered given the record walleye request this year.” Read more..Saturday, July 24th, 2010 Posted in Assorted Outdoors, Deer Hunting News | No Comments »
North Dakota state officials are encouraged that the National Park Service has started recruiting volunteers to help reduce the elk population in Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s south unit. The NPS announced details of the process July 19. Under the plan, volunteers will have an opportunity to harvest elk within the park using firearms. The plan includes having five teams, each consisting of one team leader and four volunteers, in the park each week for 12 weeks, beginning in November 2010.
