The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is seeking volunteers to participate in a cooperative arrangement that has given hunters access to approximately 250,000 acres of private timberlands near Mount St. Helens in the last three years. For the fourth year, the Weyerhaeuser Company is prepared to give hunters holding special elk permits additional motorized access to miles of private logging roads on the St. Helens Tree Farm, provided that enough volunteers can be found to assure a safe and orderly hunt. Key tasks for volunteers include orienting hunters, staffing access points, and maintaining safety buffers between hunters and active Weyerhaeuser operations, said Sandra Jonker, regional wildlife manager for WDFW. The program attracted 54 volunteers in 2007, 61 in 2008, and 49 volunteers last year, she said. Read more..

The United States Department of Agriculture - Wildlife Services, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, trapped a wolf pup early last week in the northern Lower Peninsula. This occurred during an effort to trap and place a radio-collar on a wolf following the verification of a wolf pack in the northern Lower Peninsula earlier this year. “If efforts to trap and collar an adult wolf are successful, we will have the ability to better monitor the distribution, activities, and number of wolves in the region,” said Jennifer Kleitch, wildlife biologist for the DNRE. Black bear sightings are becoming more common in southern Wisconsin as bruins find areas previously considered occasional or rare for bear sightings suitable for occupancy. “Wisconsin’s bear population is considerably higher than it was 20 years ago,” said Linda Olver, acting DNR bear biologist. “Bear distribution in Wisconsin has shifted further south and southwest, facilitated by the increase in the bear population and areas of suitable habitat available in southern Wisconsin” A 2008 bear population study estimated Wisconsin’s current bear population at between 26,000 and 40,000 bears. This is up from 1989, when the population was estimated at 9,000. The newer population study is scheduled to be repeated in 2011 to check against the 2008 results. Read more..

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) enforcement officers will be increasing resource-protection patrols on the Skokomish River, where recreational salmon fishing opens Aug. 1 under several new regulations. "Anglers should read the regulation pamphlet carefully before heading out to fish the Skokomish River, because there are several changes this year and our officers will be strictly enforcing all the rules," said Mike Cenci, WDFW’s deputy chief of enforcement. The daily bag limit has been increased this year from one to two salmon for anglers fishing from the mouth of the river to the Highway 101 Bridge through Sept. 30. However, a new rule in effect this year requires anglers to carefully release any wild chinook salmon they catch. As in previous years, anglers must release chum salmon through ... Read more..
