Sign Up Now For Youth Pheasant Hunts In September

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and its partners will be sponsoring 14 pre-season upland bird hunts in September for young hunters under age 17. Registration for these hunts begins on Sept. 2. According to James Reed, ODFW hunter education coordinator, these pre-season pheasant and upland bird hunts allow young and possibly inexperience hunters to hunt before the season opens and other hunters are in the field. “These early hunts offer young hunters a good chance at bagging a bird,” Reed said. In conjunction with many of the youth hunts, ODFW will be holding free shotgun skills clinics where participants will learn basic shotgun skills and shoot some sporting clays. Read more..

DNR Seeks Designs For Minnesota’s 2011 Walleye Stamp

Wildlife artists can submit entries for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) 2011 walleye stamp from Monday, Oct. 11, through Friday, Oct. 22. Designs should be securely wrapped and enclosed in an envelope or other container. The words “Walleye Stamp” should be clearly marked on outside of the container. Late entries will not be accepted. The walleye (Sander vitreus) must be the primary focus of the design. Other fish species may be included in the design if they are used to depict common interaction between species or are common inhabitants of Minnesota’s lakes and rivers. Read more..

New Hunting And Trapping Rules In Effect For 2010 Seasons

Hunters and trappers looking forward to the 2010-2011 seasons will have some new rules to follow as they pursue their fall pastimes. Several of the new rules were requested and supported by hunters and trappers at the annual Spring Rule Hearings. Others have come to life in response to changing wildlife management needs and new technologies. Most of the newer rules are found in the “What’s New” section of the fall seasons regulations pamphlets and are also listed in a new fact sheet available online on the Hunting and Trapping Regulations page of the Department of Natural Resources website. Commercial Fishing Net Locations May Soon Change On Lake Michigan

Boaters and anglers recreating on Lake Michigan in the Sheboygan and Manitowoc/Two Rivers area will want to keep an eye out in coming weeks for the flags and buoys that mark commercial fishing trap nets, as restrictions on where they can place those nets change after Labor Day. “The nets may be moving after Labor Day when the restrictions end,” says Wisconsin’s Fisheries Director Mike Staggs. “We want to make sure that people are on the look out for the flags and buoys that mark the nets and avoid them, wherever they are. There’s a lot of water out there. Let’s share it safely.” Read more..
