FWC Seeks Information On Listed Species

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) passed new rules Wednesday for conserving and managing threatened species in Florida. The new rules require biological reviews be completed on all species on the state’s lists of threatened species and species of special concern. Currently, the FWC seeks input and information on 61 listed species that have never had reviews completed, or the reviews were done so long ago that the information is no longer current. The list of species is available at MyFWC.com/ImperiledSpecies (follow the link under “Latest Updates”). FWC staff needs information on population size and trends, distribution and range, and threats to the species. Read more..

Second Over The Counter Antelope Archery Season

Sept. 13 marks the opening day of antelope archery season for Cimarron Co. and parts of Texas County. “Over-the-counter” antelope archery tags have been sold since last year when archery season hunters harvested 36 antelope during the first open archery season. “September is an awesome time of year, and what better way to kick off the fall season than a great hunt for a great animal on the high plains of Oklahoma?” said Wade Free, northwest region wildlife supervisor for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. EPA Denies Petition Calling For Lead Ammunition Ban

Many people have been following developments regarding the petition submitted Aug. 3 to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by the Center for Biological Diversity, American Bird Conservancy and three other groups, seeking a national ban on lead ammunition and fishing tackle. The following is an update. The EPA last week (Aug. 27) denied the portion of the petition calling for a ban on lead ammunition, stating the agency (EPA) does not have the legal authority to regulate ammunition under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Double Check Controlled Sage Grouse Hunt Results

Due to a computer glitch, applicants for the controlled sage grouse hunt may have been shown the wrong information when they went online to check their results yesterday. Officials at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife are recommending that applicants, who initially received an “unsuccessful” notification, check again at http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/hunting/my_hunter_info.asp. The sage grouse season begins Sept. 11 and runs through Sept. 19. Read more..
