DEC Releases Strategic Plan for State Forest Management

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Pete Grannis today announced the release of a draft "Strategic Plan for State Forest Management." The plan will guide management of the 786,000-acre state forest holdings and is available for public review and comment through Oct. 29. Key goals of the draft plan focus on eco-system health and diversity, economic benefits, forest conservation, recreation and sustainable management." Two years ago, New York's state-owned forests were 'green certified' by international forestry standards - a designation awarded to only 10 percent of the world's forests. Deer Exchange Available Again in 2010

Hunters again will be able to provide deer meat to anyone willing to accept it, thanks to a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission program. Nebraska has an ample deer population, as well as many hunting opportunities. The Deer Exchange is designed to accommodate the additional harvest of deer. Hunters who have filled their freezers may still bag a deer and have somewhere to take the meat. Kentucky Gearing Up For Woodcock Season

The courtship flight of the American woodcock is a harbinger of spring, but when the weather warms up and their young are fledged, the squatty little birds with long, flexible bills fly off to the Great Lakes states for the summer. Back here, upland bird hunters are working their dogs and shooting clay targets with their shotguns in anticipation of the return of the woodcock. Kentucky’s 45-day fall season opens Oct. 16 and closes Nov. 29. “Woodcock are absent from Kentucky during the hot and dry summer months,” said Rocky Pritchert, migratory bird program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. “They return for the fall, but when the ground begins to freeze up, they migrate southward to Louisiana and other Gulf Coast states for the winter.” Read more..

West Virginia Early Archery And Muzzleloader Seasons

Special antlerless deer seasons for archery and muzzleloader hunters will open on private land in select counties in September,” according to West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Director Frank Jezioro. “These seasons provide an excellent opportunity to hunt deer earlier in the year when weather conditions are generally milder.” * The early archery season opens Sept. 13 and closes Sept. 18 in select counties. Hunters wishing to participate in this season must purchase a Class RB or Class RRB stamp before going afield. The stamp allows a hunter to take one antlerless deer during this early special archery season. Read more..
