Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Reports Weekend Hunting Accidents

DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement agents are investigating two hunting accidents that took place over Labor Day weekend, both on Sept. 4. The first was related to dove season, which opened Sept. 1, and involved a husband and wife who were accidentally shot by another member of their hunting party. The group was dove hunting on private property east of Dover when one of the hunters put his gun on the ground to fix a decoy. Apparently the safety was left off and when the gun was picked up, it fired, striking the victims about 35 yards away. The 27-year-old woman was struck by 18 pellets in her hand, chest, leg and lower lip. The 28-year-old man was struck by nine pellets with four penetrating his scalp and neck. Both ... Read more..

Facebook Photos Lead To Arrest Of Illegal Hunters

Two Inverness residents were arrested when an investigation uncovered they had illegally taken a deer and then posted the photos on Facebook. William Andrew Buchanan (DOB 08/26/89) and Tara Anne Carver (DOB 09/06/82) were cited for possession of wildlife taken illegally, according to investigators from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). “FWC officers received information that the photos had been published on Facebook and investigated the tip,” said Lt. Steve Farmer, investigations supervisor. “Investigators then interviewed Buchanan and Carver.” Read more..

Chukar Counts Up In Snake And Salmon River Area

Not only are Chinook and steelhead fishing seasons open in the Snake River, but chukar counts are higher than they've been in years on the lower Snake and Salmon rivers south of Lewiston. Idaho Fish and Game biologists surveyed the Clearwater Region's Salmon and Snake river chukar routes August 26 and 27. They counted more chukars on both routes than in the most recent previous surveys in 2008. The chukar and gray partridge season opens statewide September 18. They counted a total of 1,491 chukars on the Salmon River route - an increase of 95 percent over the 766 birds tallied in 2008 and 69 percent higher than the long-term average of 882 from 1994 through 2008. DNR Now Accepting Aquaculture Permits

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is now accepting applications for new aquaculture permits under new oyster leasing regulations that went into effect yesterday. DNR will also be announcing its overall oyster management budget including a package of technical and financial opportunities for aquaculture ventures later this month to help accelerate the growth of this industry in Maryland and create new jobs. Regulations to implement the State’s new Oyster Restoration and Aquaculture Development Plan became effective on September 6. The regulations identify thousands of new acres open to leasing for aquaculture; establish a new application process and rules for aquaculture; identify areas off limits to leasing to support a continued public oyster fishery; and identify the State’s new network of oyster sanctuaries, which are expanding from 9% ...
