Lost Lake Brook Trout Population to Be Rehabilitated

The brook trout population in Schoolcraft County's Lost Lake will be rehabilitated during October, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment announced today. To facilitate the rehabilitation, the organic compound rotenone will be used to eliminate fish species that compete with brook trout for habitat and forage resources. Rotenone is a natural substance found in the roots of certain tropical plants, and has been widely used for decades in fisheries management in Michigan. It is the same compound used commonly in organic gardening to kill insect pests and protect vegetables. Rotenone is not harmful to humans, other mammals or birds, and does not accumulate in soil, water or plants. Read more..

Minnesota DNR Auctions Confiscated Outdoor Gear

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will auction a select inventory of confiscated outdoors equipment on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Hiller Auction Barn in Zimmerman, Minn. The barn is located two miles east of the Highway 169 and the County Road 4 intersection in Zimmerman. Inventory will be available for preview/inspection on Friday, Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., and on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. The auction starts at 11 a.m. The auction will include nearly 300 rifles, shotguns, and bows seized by conservation officers over the past four years. Minnesota’s Pheasant Index Remains Unchanged From 2009

Minnesota’s pheasant index remains unchanged from 2009 but is 22 percent below the 10-year average, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Contributing factors to the below-average index include: * The most severe winter in the farmland region of Minnesota since 2001, resulting in hen counts 28 percent below the 10-year average. * Fewer nesting opportunities caused by the removal of more than 100,000 acres of private land from the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and other farm programs during the past four years. * Cool, wet weather during the normal June peak of the pheasant hatch appears to have reduced early brood survival. Michigan Small Game Seasons Opens Sept. 15

Department of Natural Resources and Environment officials remind hunters that a number of small game seasons open Wednesday, Sept. 15. Seasons on ruffed grouse, rabbits and hares, and squirrels open on the same day. Woodcock season opens Saturday, Sept. 25. Hunters who plan to pursue woodcock are reminded that they must have a federal Harvest Information Program (HIP) endorsement on their small game licenses. The endorsement, which is free of charge, will say "Migratory Bird Hunter - Yes" and appear printed on the license. Hunters who purchase a waterfowl license are automatically enrolled. Read more..
