Mueller State Parks winter programs and guided hikes

Mueller State Park is becoming a winter wonderland! Stopover to catch a breath of fresh, crisp air by hiking, snowshoeing, sledding and cross-country skiing. Remember our cabins are available year-round and if you’re looking to brave the cold, try some winter camping in select sites. When enjoying the winter weather, always have a map and be prepared with water, sun protection and be dressed in warm layers. All of our offered programs are free, but you must have a $7 daily pass or a $70 annual pass on your vehicle to enter the park. First Day Hikes – Outlook Ridge
Date: 1/1/2013

Location: Mueller State Park / Outlook Ridge Trailhead

Join volunteer naturalist Rose Banzahf for an easy to moderate 2-mile hike along the gentle westward trail to three overlook options, each featuring fantastic views of the Continental Divide. Snowshoes/shoe spikes may be necessary.

First Day Hikes – School Pond

Location: Mueller State Park / Visitor Center Parking Lot
An easy to moderate 2-mile hike to School Pond that includes views of Sentinel Point and Pikes Peak before a slight uphill challenge on the return to the Visitor Center. Snowshoes/shoe spikes may be necessary.

First Day Hikes – Wapiti Nature Trail

A moderate .81-mile hike along the Wapiti Nature Trail. Great for kids and the whole family, theres lots of opportunity to learn and observe all thats around us!

First Day Hikes – Peak View Pond Trail

Location: Mueller State Park / Elk Meadow Trailhead
An easy .8-mile hike through the conifer and aspen mixed forest to Peak View Pond. Great views of Pikes Peak and serene landscape surround Peak View Pond.

Winter Hiking Series

Location: Mueller State Park / Visitor Center Parking Lot
Enjoy the winter and the snow while experiencing the trails in white! Volunteer naturalist Nancy Remmler will guide you on a series of hikes throughout the winter on every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, January – March. Each hike will be determined by YOU! Bring your favorite hiking suggestions, sturdy, insulated and waterproof shoes/boots, winter shoe spikes/cleats, and/or snowshoes, layered winter clothing, sun protection, water, and snacks. Please come prepared for all types of snow conditions, hikes will take place regardless of snow or ice.

Volcano Talk

Location: Mueller State Park / Visitor Center Auditorium
Volunteer naturalist Bob Hickey will give an engaging and eye-opening talk about volcanoes. There will be geologic specimens and examples for a complete representation of the volcanic rocks around us in the region. There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion and Q & A.

Touch Table: Sedimentary Rocks

Check out the hands-on samples and learn about local geology with volunteer naturalist Bob Hickey. View a complete representation of the sedimentary rocks around us in the region. You can touch and feel specimens and learn how to identify them. Also, bring your favorite rock to show Bob!
