Program Announced to Restore Chesapeake Bay Shorelines

The Chesapeake Bay Trust, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland Department of the Environment will announce the recipients of their Living Shorelines Grant Program, a collaborative multi-state effort designed to encourage the installation and understanding of “living shorelines” throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed. This program, now in its seventh year, has awarded more than $4 million and leveraged $7 million in matching funds from landowners to promote living shorelines, an innovative technique which protects coastlines from erosion while also providing critical Bay habitat for fish, crabs, and other wildlife. This announcement of more than $800,000 to 12 recipients in Maryland and four in Virginia marks the largest amount ever awarded to support this ground-breaking restoration technique, and celebrates the newest partner in the funding collaborative, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

During the event, grant recipients will discuss the exceptional ecological benefits of living shorelines, as well as what they plan to do with the funding. Additionally, area residents can learn more about efforts to create their own living shorelines and what living shorelines mean for private residential property. The event will be held at the site of three neighboring homeowners who learned about this technique in part through demonstration projects funded through the Living Shoreline funding collaborative and who worked together to remove bulkheads and build a contiguous living shoreline on their properties.
