51 Boys Harvest 79 Deer with Operation Orphans, Inc.

Boys from 9 child residential and foster homes came to Camp Gene Ashby in Mason county Friday afternoon. The 51 boys along with hunting guides and chaperones traveled to 12 area ranches Saturday, December 2nd eager to enjoy a deer hunt. The young hunters came from Methodist Boy’s Ranch, Waco; Collard Home, Walnut Springs; Methodist Home, Waco; Gulf Coast Trades Center, New Waverly; Medina Children’s Home, Medina; West Texas Boy’s Ranch, San Angelo; Acuna Foster Home, LaPorte; Sweeten Home, Brownwood and Kidz Harbor, Liverpool. Area ranches hosting the hunting groups were IX Ranch, Mason county; Karl Ransleben, Gillespie; Lazy H Ranch, Mason; Lehmberg Livestock, Mason; Lucky Draw Ranch, Menard; Mitchell Creek, Mason; Northcutt Ranch, Mason; Rock Head Ranch, Mason; Straley Ranch, Mills; and Ziegler James River Ranch, Mason. These ranches use this program as a management tool to harvest excess animals. They also graciously allow the participating kids a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and learn valuable lessons of stewardship and responsibility.

The 51 boys harvested 79 deer. Those deer included 47 does, 21 spikes, and 11 bucks. It was a great day of enjoying fellowship and the outdoors. Volunteers came from all across Texas to serve as guides and spend the day with the young hunters. All individuals who serve as guides must be 21 years or older, successfully complete a hunter’s safety course and have a background check.

Members of Wolf 281 of Mason boy scouts prepared sack lunches for the groups for Saturday. Those assisting were Jensen Allin, Jacob Cortez, Sam Ruiz along with adults Bonnie Beam, Jessica Allin, and Sherry Lehmberg. Other Mason boy scouts prepared the Saturday morning breakfast. Jacob Kruso, Clay Lindsay, Garrett Lindsay, Stephen Kruso, Oden Ruiz, and Terry Simonton participated.

Two hunts were held earlier in the season in which 43 girls harvested 48 animals in October and 47 boys harvested 52 animals in November. The final hunt for the 2017 deer season will take place January 6. An Operation Orphans, Inc. board of directors meeting will take place Sunday, January 7, 9:00 a.m.
