Fall isn’t the only time to hunt in Maine

Deer is the most popular game species to hunt in Maine, but why wait until fall to spend time in Maine’s woods? Here are some hunting opportunities to try this winter and spring:

Snowshoe Hare
One of the enjoyable aspects of hunting in the winter is the ability to easily see fresh animal tracks in the snow! Grab a pair of snowshoes and hire a guide, who may have a trained dog, for an enjoyable winter hunt.

Snowshoe hare season is September 28, 2019 – March 31, 2020, with the exception of Vinalhaven Island in Knox County which has a season end date of February 28, 2020.

Maine predator seasons are long providing hunters ample opportunity. Day or night, calling is a popular tactic for luring in wary predators.

Season Dates:

Bobcat: December 2, 2019 – February 21, 2020

Coyote Night Hunt: December 16, 2019 – August 31, 2020

Coyote: Year round

Fox: October 21, 2019 – February 28, 2020

Enjoy warmer temperatures and the thrill of calling in a boisterous bearded wild turkey this spring!

Wooden box calls are ideal for beginners and fun to use. Chalk up the lid and brush across the bottom box causing friction and noise. Strike lightly for a softer call and harder for a more aggressive call.

Spring turkey season is May 4 – June 6, 2020. Youth day is May 2. Learn more about wild turkey hunting in Maine.
