Utah upland game season is officially underway
As you prepare to set out on this year’s hunt, make sure you have all the info you need on your desired upland game species. You’ll want to know where to look for animals and also review tips to help you have a successful hunt.
To add an extra challenge to your hunts this fall, consider participating in the Upland Game Slam, which encourages hunters to harvest a variety of upland game species, while generating money to help fund a variety of habitat and upland game-related projects.
Double-check your hunt dates
Next, make sure you visit the 2022-23 Utah Upland Game Guidebook for hunting season dates (hunt tables begin on page 37). Many hunts began Sept. 1, and the youth hunts will be held on the following dates:
Youth chukar and gray partridge hunt: Sept. 17-19
Youth California and Gambel’s quail hunt: Oct. 29-31
Youth ring-necked pheasant hunt: Oct. 29-Nov. 3
Get your free HIP number
Don’t forget: If any of the species you’re planning to hunt are migratory birds, you’ll need a Harvest Information Program number before hunting them. Getting a HIP number is easy and only takes a few minutes. You can register for a free HIP number on the DWR website.
The upland game season offers a variety of hunt options — some of which last until February or March — which means you’ll have a lot of exciting hunts in the months ahead. Remember to pack out any trash from your hunt and to get written permission from the landowner before hunting on any private properties.
